However, this does not mean that it is already out of the running in the smartphone market. In fact, a few months after the announcement, it then made public its partnership with TCL.

This partnership brought forth new handsets like the DTEK50 and DTEK60. Although the phones were mildly received by the consumers, the reviews were somewhat passable in the end. Now, a recent tweet from TCL’s president and general manager, Steve Cistulli, hints of an impending product release.

According to the post, TCL and Blackberry will be unveiling a product during next year’s CES or the Consumer Electronics Show. This led many to believe that the product in question is the new smartphone dubbed as the DTEK70.

The DTEK70, otherwise known as Mercury, will sport the keypads that made the Blackberry phones famous. It will be based on the Android operating system instead of the original Blackberry OS. The phone will be marked as a mid-range device featuring a Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 running at 2GHz.

The reason for the subpar specs is the previous qualms expressed by consumers on Blackberry phone pricing. According to John Chen, Blackberry’s CEO, most enterprise customers wanting to buy a Blackberry are somewhat deterred by the phone’s price. Previous Blackberry smartphones like the Priv, costs around $700. Most of its customers need a Blackberry phone which is something to the tune of $400.

Because of this, Blackberry downgraded the specs for the rumored DTEK70 smartphone. Instead of going all out with the Snapdragon 821s of the market, it settled with a far cheaper and inferior processor. This brought down the price of the phone by a considerable margin. Rumor has it that the DTEK70 will retail for $450 on release.

For now, the phone is known as the DTEK70. Others, however, call it Mercury. There are still no clarifications on what the new Blackberry phone will be called. However, the wait is almost over as CES 2017 looms near. Source: Thebitbag
